A practical comparison of town-based beach living and a larger resort corridor.
Delaware offers several separate beach towns, each with its own center and beach experience. Ocean City offers an extended resort corridor with oceanfront and bay-side choices. Compare the specific community and property rather than treating either state as one market.
If you prefer a detached house, compare inland neighborhoods as well as beach-side streets. If you prefer a condo, evaluate the building first: its finances, insurance, common areas, maintenance history and rental policies may matter more than a state-level comparison.
Request property-specific estimates for taxes, insurance, association charges, utilities and maintenance in both locations. Have a qualified professional explain your own tax circumstances; a general reputation for low taxes is not a property budget.
Drive from home at the times you would normally travel. Spend an ordinary day in each finalist community, including errands and the trip to the beach. Your preferred destination for a vacation may differ from the place that fits repeated weekends or year-round use.
