Compare a mainland Lowcountry home base with island living.
Bluffton is a mainland alternative to a home on Hilton Head Island. If beach time is central to your plans, drive the complete route from each property to the access and parking you would use. Repeat it at the times you expect to travel rather than relying on a distance estimate.
Compare access to Old Town Bluffton with the setting and services of other neighborhoods. A Bluffton address alone does not establish walkability to the town center or access to the May River. Tour the actual streets and establish the rights associated with any waterfront features.
For a community with golf, pools or other facilities, request a written explanation of included amenities and optional or required memberships. Ask about initiation charges, recurring dues and transfer costs. Keep community fees separate from the maintenance budget for the home itself.
Consider grocery trips, medical services, storage and outdoor upkeep alongside beach access. A property suited to year-round routines may differ from your preferred vacation location. Compare finalists using the same cost worksheet rather than assuming mainland living will always cost less.
